First I want to emphasize that I really like Alice Winters' books. Her Hitman and In Darkness series were very good. This series also has been a favorite, right up until this book. Although I really liked River and Brantley individually and together, this book was so dark and depressing I had trouble finishing. And, after the first couple of sections of River's "journal", I just skipped reading the rest of those. Also, the fact that this book spanned events from the first three books was confusing and distracting. As an example, the parts with Dr. Watson and Alexei's and Claude's "courtship" interspersed with the rest of the book. It wasn't done very well and, at times, I wondered if someone else had written this book. I did finish the book but found myself constantly looking to see how much was left of the book because I wanted it to be over. Life is depressing enough right now. I wanted this author's usual quirky characters and strange and irreverent humor. I hope the next book, if there is one, is much more upbeat. 4 ½ StarsI enjoyed this. It is a good continuation of the VRC series. Is it the best of the bunch? Maybe not, but it is sweet, funny, exciting, and sexy, and it put all my favorite characters together to help these guys get to their HEA. And all these guys can be counted on to add a heaping helping of hilarity to any scene they steal…er…are involved in. They make the heartbreaking aspects of the storyline easier to take.Bentley is not the charismatic lead man that some would expect. He is down to earth, with a modest life outside of his work with the VRC. He is all about family and cherishing it above all else. His time spent with River gives him a lighter, more playful outlook on life even as they face harsh times. I liked watching him ease into that relationship.Rivers’ story is hard to read. It is bearable only because the author fed it to me in pieces instead of as a whole. I cried for him. I laughed with him. I love him and his silly, quirky manner. And I adore his bonding with Bentley. They bring out the best in each other.You do need to read the previous books before this one. I binge-read the others before starting this one, and I'm glad I did. (It was NOT a chore, believe me.)Oh, and Banshee is my spirit animal. Just saying…I look forward to more from this author.
