Ebook About My job is to save lives. But what if the one that needs saving is the one I was sent to take?At 33 years old, Phoenix Jones once had a stellar military career ahead of him. But when tragedy struck his family, he walked away from the path he’d chosen to be there for the one who needed him most. Except fate is a bitch and when she once again takes Phoenix’s future in the cruelest of ways, he must find a new path. When a former army buddy introduces him to Ronan Grisham, the leader of an underground vigilante group, Phoenix knows he’s found a new family and nothing and no one is going to take that from him again. So when Ronan asks him to shadow a young man who participated in a brutal crime against Ronan’s husband, Seth, when he was a child and appears to be targeting him again, Phoenix doesn’t even hesitate for a second.Even knowing what he must do if the young man proves to have gone back to his old ways.Because family is everything…I can’t come back from what I did. I’m not sure I even want to…An ugly childhood left Levi Deming with little to do but dream of a day when he’d be free of his tormenters so he could carve out a simple life for himself, preferably somewhere far away from the family who never let him forget he was less than human. But one terrible choice at the tender age of 16 changed everything…Wracked with guilt for the role he played during a home invasion gone horribly wrong, a now 24-year-old Levi is trying to piece together a life where he can maybe do a little bit of good, even knowing it won’t make up for the lives he helped take and it definitely won’t give back the future he stole from the young man whose agonized screams still haunt him night after night. If it were only about him, he’d walk into the nearest police station and happily tell them to lock him up and throw away the key.But it isn’t just about him anymore…I expected to find a hardened criminal. What I found was something else entirely…With Ronan’s orders to terminate young Levi if he so much as even jaywalks, Phoenix expects an easy job with one clear outcome. But when a violent encounter forces Phoenix to interact with Levi, he quickly realizes the case might not be as black and white as he thought. Instead of finding a criminal with no conscience, Phoenix discovers a young man battling impossible odds and near crippling guilt. When his feelings of disgust and anger begin to fade and turn into something else, the would-be hitman is forced to make a terrible decision between the family he needs and the young man more intent on seeking judgement than redemption.Trigger Warning: This book contains multiple triggers which could also be considered spoilers. You can find the correct reading order at the beginning of each book. I've also bundled all my series in the correct reading order under the title of A Family Chosen: The Protectors and Barrettis.Book Redemption (The Protectors, Book 8) Review :
I've read every book in this series and most of the books in her related series, but this particular one touched me the most. I think that was probably because I related so much more to Levi than just about any other character in the series. Levi's character is how I see myself and most other people...as deeply flawed individuals, mostly just trying to do what's right, and struggling along the way. I also deeply appreciated Levi's psychology. It always seems to me that it's so easy for us to see and believe in the ugly parts of our nature, while it takes those who love us to point out the beautiful parts of ourselves.Like another reader posted, I too was riveted by the show down in the church, but elements of the scene bothered me. For example, as much as I adore Ronan's character, I couldn't help but be bothered by his unwavering belief that he was doing the right thing. That's the problem with playing judge, jury, and executioner. People are flawed and make mistakes, and everyone has a different idea on just what the right thing is in any given situation. Ronan himself has been wrong before in his judgement (just ask Jonas from book one), and I would have liked to see someone remind him of that. The dynamic between Seth and Levi also struck a chord with me for some reason. It seems to me that sometimes the discomfort we perceive as being caused by us is actually our own discomfort being projected onto a third party. This is to say that a lot of the times Levi made mention of Seth being reminded of the worst time in his life whenever he looked at him, I had to wonder if Levi was really struggling with his own reminders of past trauma whenever he was in Seth's presence. It would have been nice if Phoenix had considered this possibility and maybe helped Levi work through it.All in all however, it was another excellent addition to this series. I highly recommend this author to anyone who is looking for a wonderfully complex and dramatic love story. A long needed twist, just when I thought this series was starting to get stale, and this book was worth every page. I've noted from previous installments in the Protectors series that, after a while, you can start to predict the various twists and turns the story will take. I thought I knew where this was going, how the story was going to play out... and halfway through, something happened that I should have seen coming, but didn't and it legit shocked me.For starters, this was the first interracial couple in the Protectors family. The first attempt with Eli and Mav in Forsaken was still both of them being at least half-white. Phoenix is a gentleman of color, and for this book, Sloane Kennedy pulled no punches and buckled down and did the work to save the pieces of that character that could have been very clumsy and awkward, especially for a white person to write. Instead, it comes across as very natural what kinds of hoops and struggles Phoenix has had to live through in his life, but also make it rewarding that he's found people who love, respect, and trust him, unconditionally. It also makes for a well-earned shock when the Protectors family is contrasted with Levi's family, and every second of it is well-paced and smartly written. The next big departure is who his love interest is, in Levi, who is white as white can be, but also connected to a previous case that the Protectors have handled, way back in the first few books. It's a first to see someone whom had previously been a target of the Protectors (and, we learn, actually involved in one of the more brutal, serious crimes, and not just a case of mistaken identity, like with Jonas) and learn that they AREN'T beyond forgiveness and redemption -- hence, the very fitting title. So far, whenever someone has committed a crime and the Protectors take aim at them, they're the worst kind of scum, completely without any redeeming qualities, which is why the Protectors are vigilantes who KILL people. This was a challenge to the basic premise of the series, and it doesn't shy away from how it challenges the characters' preconceptions of what they do -- it's wonderfully unsettling to see Ronan revert back to his old self, ready to kill someone without mercy, just when we'd gotten used to him being the open and emotionally available family man, AND just as we've gotten to know Levi and don't want to see him hurt. But the biggest moment that made my jaw drop was in a scene that both called on Levi's past AND how his past was at odds with Phoenix's identity, and, in any other story, I would have seen it coming, but the Protectors had me expecting something completely different, and made the shock that much more meaningful (to avoid spoilers, let's just say it has to do with the Band-Aid on the inside of Levi's wrist) As a result, though, because I was so taken off guard by everything this book did different, it also made the old, familiar steps something of a greater comfort, and more satisfying -- be it Levi's relationship with his nephew, Henry, Phoenix's own family, how quickly they fall in love, and the ultimate resolution, revolving around Seth and his and Ronan's adorable children. When I read this book, I'd been started to get a little tired of the Protectors, but this just renewed my connection to the Protectors family men.
