Ebook About Remembering the dead will always give them life. The coveted Morrígan’s staff is up for sale on the black market to the highest bidder, and SOA Special Agent Patrick Collins will do whatever it takes to ensure the Dominion Sect doesn’t get their hands on it. Returning the weapon to its rightful owner is another step on the long road toward clearing Patrick’s soul debt, but he won’t walk it alone. Jonothon de Vere won’t let him.Obeying the gods means Patrick must travel to London. For Jono, it means facing a past he thought he’d left behind forever. His return to England isn’t welcome, and neither is their pack, but Jono and Patrick will face the antagonism together. Politics aside, their priority must be the mission, but the bone-chilling secret they uncover in the London god pack will have far-reaching repercussions no one can ignore.A race against time takes Patrick and Jono from the streets of London to the bright lights of Paris, where hospitality is thin on the ground, the air is filled with whispered prayers for the missing, and the Morrígan’s staff will end up in the one place it should never have gone—a graveyard. For beneath Paris lie the long-forgotten dead, and when they rise to walk again, the living can only hope to die.Book On the Wings of War (Soulbound Book 5) Review :
I stumbled across Hailey Turner by accident, really, from a targeted Facebook ad. Eleven books, three novellas and several short stories in, it's safe to say that I've become a lifelong fan. Like many readers, I began with her excellently done "Metahuman Files" series before the "Soulbound" series began. Starting with "A Ferry of Bones and Gold", the Soulbound series was a bit of a slow burn for me at first. Urban fantasy can be very hit or miss for proper world-building, and I wasn't jumping as easily into Patrick's modern, magic/war-torn world at first. Patrick is very prickly and a bit of a berk at first, though in an endearing way, and the way the story begins, you don't have the most context for it. Thankfully, I was interested enough that I kept going, and I've reached the point where I can honestly say that it's a hard choice to make whether the Metahuman Files or Soulbound is my favorite of Turner's two series. Not since Kendare Blake's "Mortal Gods" trilogy have I found such a well-woven and convincing modern world thrown into chaos by the meddling of the gods of the old worlds. What makes Turner's world so amazing is that she has clearly done a great deal of research, as Patrick and his werewolf-lover Jonothan come up against very accurately and interestingly portrayed Greek, Norse, Slavic, Celtic, Native American, and Latin American mythological figures - and that's just a few; the world is peopled with mages, necromancers, Faeries, werewolves, vampires, dragons, demons, angels, and everything in-between. The interference of the gods in Patrick's life is very in keeping with Homer's "Iliad" in how the gods interfered in the Trojan War for their own amusement at the expense of the mortals they 'favored'.No matter how modernized and hip and somewhat funny Hermes is, he's still a frustrating, first class jerk -- but again, that's very accurate to how the gods truly are in most mythologies. Their ways are not our ways, and they don't have a lot of respect for mortal thoughts or needs. Where we just left our fledgling pack of found family, the Norse pantheon battling against Ethan's Dominion Cult had destroyed Chicago, while the battle between the were-creatures of New York City was getting hellishly complicated. We got some astounding revelations and some gut-wrenching decisions, and through it, Pat and Jono's relationship was the rock that kept things steady.I adore these two's relationship. A lot of what made up the lovers of the Metahuman Files was a burning, explosive passion, and it's very nice to see the antithesis of this here -- this is not at all a criticism; I think it just shows more of Turner's range as an author. Patrick and Jono's love is rock-solid, but it's also quiet, strong, and grounded, and doesn't need fireworks to make it a searing connection that holds the story together. The continued theme of found family holds strong in "Wings of War", with the foibles and struggles of Jono's pack giving a strong weight to what these characters stand to lose if they fail in the war against Ethan. We get a bit more of a peek here into Patrick's extremely complicated relationship with his boss Setsuna, which is always interesting. Wade, the fledgling dragon with a bottomless stomach, toes a very fine line between comic relief and being a bit too much as the token child of the story, but he's so damn endearing that it's a line Turner walks with great skill. The world's eyes are set on the Morrigan's staff, and we meet some Slavic mythology here - including a surprise appearance I absolutely refuse to spoil here from one of my favorite weird and wacky childhood stories. If you like Russian fairy tales, I promise you will be *delighted* toward that point in the story. We travel from the US to London to Paris (including a fascinating yet gut-churning segue into the Catacombs, naturally), and there are yet more revelations, plot twists, and THAT ENDING, of course, which just makes you angry that the book even ended at all. You get some answers, but not enough to satisfy you - and not in a frustrating way, either; this book just fills you with even more promise that you're going to get another solid installment whenever book six comes out.Overall, "On the Wings of War" continues the Soulbound story phenomenally well - another cleverly crafted witch's brew of horror, suspense, action, adventure, humor, and romance that expertly moves the story along while still keeping more than enough cards close to the author's chest that the reader can't truly guess what comes next...just that it's a 'next' we're all desperately wanting as soon as possible. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book, and if this book doesn't leave you questioning if Patrick and Jono are your true OTP of all time you and I must have read a different book. Highly recommended! I have been blown away by every single book this author has written. Every. Single. One.On the Wings of War is no exception and is an excellent continuation of the Soulbound series.Patrick and Jono’s relationship continues to strengthen, giving them a solid yet soft place to land as they make their way through the dangerous and exhausting situations thrown at them. And poor, poor Patrick. Not a vacation day in sight. At least he has Jono to comfort him.And Patrick supports Jono as he deals with a past that he never thought he would revisit. It shows that it isn’t just the Patrick show. Jono is cherished and protected too.The pack is loyal, supportive, and familial. Though few, the members do all they can to be encouraging and helpful and let them know when they think they are making questionable or downright stupid decisions. But they support them anyway. And they love each other. A found family. I like that.I enjoyed seeing Sage shine in this installment. Bravo, Sage! I love seeing a strong female character that isn’t afraid to be feminine and fierce. Well done.Wade is still cute, moody, mouthy, and hungry. Watching him eat all the time makes my belly hurt, both from laughing and in sympathy. I'm enjoying watching him grow up.The continuing storyline moved forward with exciting and explosive action. This author is a master at confrontation scenes. I stay on the edge of my seat with bated breath, easily visualizing each parry and thrust (or mage ball and shift). And there are ZOMBIES!!!Yes, this author puts me right into the action, and I find that I expect that with every book of hers that I read. There is one part with low action, but in a precarious location that Patrick was experiencing that was just awful. Wonderfully awful. I had to put it down for a while and then read in fits and starts until it was over. So good. So creepy and disturbing…but so good. There is so much I want to say—so many things I want to rave about, but…Spoilers.Suffice it to say that I love this book just as much as the others. It is just as fresh and exhilarating as the previous books. And I love the twist at the end. You naughty author, you.As always, I look forward to more from this author.
